Happy Sunday! Welcome to another edition of the Pop Recap newsletter, filled with all the trending things you need to know in the entertainment world. Today, we’re covering everything from Stereophonic’s new lawsuit to what we know about the new Charli XCX album.

🗞️ MAKING HEADLINES 🗞️

🏫It’s 100% real now. The heavily rumored crossover between two Philadelphia comedy series that couldn’t be more different, Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is officially happening. I love both shows and am very curious how this is going to play out considering the characters in It’s Always Sunny almost certainly shouldn’t be allowed near a school.

🪕Two Fleetwood Mac producers are suing 5-time Tony Award winning play Stereophonic for copyright infringement. Kenneth Caillat and Steven Stiefel wrote the 2012 memoir “Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album.” The duo allege that the writer of Stereophonic, David Adjmi, stole several elements of their Fleetwood Mac story, including specific catchphrases and the play’s narrative from the perspective of the producer’s seat. Adjmi has previously stated that Stereophonic is based on Fleetwood Mac, along with “other things.”

💜Olivia Rodrigo has announced the final stop for her GUTS World Tour…Netflix! A concert film for the 99-show tour will premiere on the streaming service October 29.

🍏Charli XCX is releasing a remix version of her album Brat, called Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. Over the past week, green billboards popped up across the country with names of different music artists in that iconic brat font. Now its official - Ariana Grande, The 1975, Tinashe, Caroline Polachek, Bon Iver, The Japanese House, Julian Casablancas, BB Trickz, Shygirl and Jon Hopkins are among those appearing on the project.

👍🏽 PICK OF THE WEEK 👍🏽

Okay I have three picks this week, but I’ll keep it brief. First up, Temple University’s Diamond Marching Band did a full Chappell Roan halftime show. Respectfully, I had no clue Temple was a football school, but as a former marching band girlie who loves Chappell Roan, I have to share.

My second pick of the week is a Billie Eilish’s album Hit Me Hard and Soft. Eilish’s third studio album released back in May of this year, but last week, she kicked off her tour for this album so I want to talk about it! This is my favorite album of the year. I have told many people this since its release in May, and I must explain that it’s not an opinion of mine to be taken lightly. My favorite artist Taylor Swift, released an album this year, and so did many other heavy hitters like Beyoncé, Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande. Despite this, I still say the album released by an artist I’ve never been known to like is my favorite.

Anyways, I’m talking about it now because I loved the album so much that I made sure to get tickets to Eilish’s tour and I had the opportunity to attend the show in Baltimore, MD on Friday night. It was an INCREDIBLE, massive production for an arena tour and Eilish is both charismatic and vocally talented. I’ll be sharing more of my thoughts on this tour in the upcoming week, but until then - here’s my top five off HMHAS.

  1. L’AMOUR DE MA VIE

  2. CHIHIRO

  3. BLUE

  4. THE GREATEST

  5. SKINNY

But please, if you’ve never heard the album before, listen to it from top to bottom. The songs are a collective and blend together so beautifully when you listen to it as one cohesive piece.

Now for my final pick of the week…If you’ve been watching the news or just been online, I’m sure you’ve heard something about the Menendez Brothers in the past two weeks. Ryan Murphy released a new edition of his Monsters true crime series on Netflix, focusing on the Lyle and Erik Menendez story. I have not watched this show, nor do I have the intention to. But I was scrolling on TikTok and because its massive popularity, I was recommended a video about the show. I don’t even remember what it was about but the song playing in the background was Milli Vanilli’s “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You.”

Now, I’m well aware Milli Vanilli is not super niche. The German duo had hits in the 90s and an even larger scandal, but as someone who has regularly and shamelessly streamed their music for the past two years, I always felt I was pretty alone in my enjoyment. So when I saw the song used in a TikTok, I thought to myself…how on earth does anyone else in my generation know who these guys are???

I clicked on the audio and saw it was extremely viral, but all the videos were about the Menendez brothers. It turns out the brothers played that song at their parents funeral, and that moment was shown in the trending show, introducing tons of new people to the song. Their song “Blame it on the Rain,” was also heavily used in the show. As a result, Milli Vanilli has gone viral. Their Spotify streams have doubled, with “Blame it on the Rain,” seeing the highest increase of 258%. Anyways, I need people to know I did not discover Milli Vanilli because of a Ryan Murphy show, and if you don’t know who Milli Vanilli is, I’m recommending that you do a deep dive. You can start with their documentary on Paramount, which I happened to watch last October. Anyways, if you’re curious THIS is what they’re using “Blame it on the Rain” for…

@vampzelena
