The Lakers are Seeing Double: Pop Recap #5
Happy Sunday to my fellow fans of pop culture! Tonight is an exciting night because the BET Awards air live at 8PM! Will Smith will be performing a brand new song during the ceremony, hosted by Taraji P. Henson. Ice Spice, Latto, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Tyla, Victoria Monét, and more round out the roster of performances for the night. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest stories from this week…
The 2024 NBA Draft took place and Bronny James was drafted to play alongside his dad, Lebron James, for the Los Angeles Lakers.
NBC has announced a tribute special in honor of Toby Keith’s life and career, set to air on August 28. The special will feature performances by Carrie Underwood, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Eric Church and more. The event will take place on July 29 in Nashville, TN and tickets are currently available to the general public.
Hallmark has announced a new Christmas movie in collaboration with the Kansas City Chiefs…and it’s totally not inspired by Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship. “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” is set to begin production in July and premiere during Hallmark's Countdown to Christmas.
The MTV News website has officially been shut down, removing two decades of pop culture articles from the internet. Last year, Paramount ceased MTV News operations after the company’s financial struggles.
Internet stars Dan and Phil have announced The Terrible Influence Tour, set to kick off in Antwerp, BE on September 4.
Six Flags has announced its partners for this year’s Fright Fest Halloween celebration. This Fall, parks across the country will be able to enter the worlds of “Saw,” “Stranger Things,” “The Conjuring” and more.
Walt Disney World has announced the dates and details for this year’s parks holiday celebrations. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom will take place on select nights, November 8 until December 20. Disney Jollywood Nights at Hollywood Studios will take place on select nights, November 9 until December 21.
Also…if you want to feel old, a lot of things turned 10 years old this week, including 5 Seconds of Summer’s debut self-titled album, Shawn Mendes’ debut single “Life of the Party,” and Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World.”

A new movie based on Donkey from the “Shrek” franchise is in development, with Eddie Murphy set to star.
The first trailer for Robert Zemeckis’ film “Here” has been released. The movie, which stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, will take place over the course of 100 years in a single living room, with no camera movements.

The Who’s Tommy has announced its final performance will be July 21, after 20 previews and 132 performances. The show will embark on a national tour, beginning in Providence, RI in fall 2025.

Disney’s Hercules is headed to London’s West End. The new musical is set to premiere in summer 2025.
Christian Borle has joined the cast of “Tammy Faye” on Broadway as Jim Bakker.
Grant Gustin has announced his final performance in Water For Elephants on Broadway. Gustin will take his final bow as Jacob on September 1.
The Jellicle Ball production of Cats at the Perelman Performing Arts Center has been extended through August 11.

Towa Bird has announced the American Hero Complex Tour, set to kick off in Santa Ana, CA on September 24.
Sara Bareilles has announced a three-night residency with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. September 24 through September 26.
New Hope Club has announced a 2024 U.S. tour, set to kick off in New York, NY on September 30.
John Legend has announced “A Night of Songs and Stories,” in Hollywood, FL on October 13.
Omar Rudberg has announced a tour, set to kick off in London on October 21.

The Emmy Awards have set September 15 as this year’s ceremony date. Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale will announce nominations on July 17.
Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1 will premiere on Netflix on July 18.
“Lanterns”, a series based on DC’s Green Lantern comic books, has been picked up by HBO.
Daniel Ezra will not return as a series regular for Season 7 of “All American.” Ezra, who plays the lead role of Spencer, will appear as a guest star in the show’s final season.
Will Forte has joined Tina Fey and Steve Carell in “The Four Seasons” at Netflix.
The upcoming “Yo Gabba Gabbaland!” series at Apple TV+ has revealed the show’s special guests lineup. Anderson .Paak, The Linda Lindas, Portugal. The Man and more will make appearances on the new revival of the children’s series.
“The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy” has been renewed for Season 3 at Apple TV.
