It’s a woman’s world!?!? | Pop Recap #7

Happy Sunday to my fellow fans of pop culture! Let’s take a look at this week’s trending topics.

  • Katy Perry has released her brand new single and music video “Woman’s World” after weeks of teasers. But the new drop is facing criticism online for catering to the male gaze, having Dr. Luke as a producer and being stuck in the past. Perry most recently responded to the backlash by claiming the video is supposed to be satire. 

  • A fifth “Shrek” movie has been announced, set to release sixteen years after the last one on July 1, 2026. Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz are all set to reprise their roles. 

  • The 2024 ESPY Awards took place on July 11 and ESPN honored the biggest names in sports. Check out the full winner’s list here.

  • The 2024 Kids Choice Awards took place on July 13 and was hosted by Spongebob and Patrick as the series “SpongeBob Squarepants” celebrates its 25th anniversary. Performers included The Kid LAROI and Paul Russell. Check out the full winner’s list here.

  • San Diego Comic-Con kicks off on July 25 and the official schedule has been revealed, with Marvel Studios, “Star Trek,” “The Walking Dead,” “Transformers,” and “The Boys” among the franchises with panels.

  • Paramount and Skydance are merging to become a combined company worth $28 billion. 

  • Ellen says she’s quitting Hollywood at the conclusion of her stand-up tour on August 17. “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done,” the comedian and former talk show host said on stage during her set in Santa Rosa, CA.

  • Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter case has officially been dismissed. The actor will not be able to be tried again for the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust.”

  • Shelley Duvall, known for her roles in “The Shining” and “Popeye” has passed away at the age of 75. 

  • Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Charmed” has passed away at the age of 53.

  • Halsey and Dua Lipa have been added to the iHeartRadio Music Festival lineup. The festival will take place in Las Vegas, NV on September 20-21. The two join Doja Cat, Big Sean, Gwen Stefani, Paramore, Hozier and more. 

  • Blackpink’s Lisa has been added to the Global Citizen Festival lineup, marking the K-POP star’s U.S. solo debut. The performance will take place in New York, NY on September 28. 

  • Sabrina Carpenter made an appearance on First We Feast’s “Hot Ones.”

  • Sabrina Carpenter has revealed the tracklist for her upcoming album short n’ sweet, set to release on August 23.

  • Joe Jonas has announced his new solo single “Work It Out” will be released on July 19.

  • Alessia Cara has announced her new single “Dead Man” will be released on July 19.

  • Katy Perry’s sixth studio album “143” is set to release on September 20.

Tour Announcements

  • Quarters of Change have announced the PORTRAITS TOUR II, set to kick off September 23 in Richmond, VA. 

  • Marc E. Bassy and Skizzy Mars have announced the Folk Heroes Tour, set to kick off on September 12 in Sacramento, CA.
